Chinese New Year – Sydney Lunar Festival

The Chinese New Year celebrations begin at the end of January or the start of February each year and run for a week. With live music, food stalls, parades and fireworks, the Chinese New Year is a great family event to celebrate together.

The festival has become the largest celebration of the Lunar New Year outside Asia – a celebration for many cultures in Sydney, including the city’s Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Korean communities. Sydney hosts an exciting number of events through to the end of the month. Think street parades, lion dancing, huge lanterns, pop up markets, art installations and plenty of delicious food.

Lunar Lanes is a favourite – when the streets of Haymarket come alive with live entertainment, roving performers, market stalls, food trucks, DJs and plenty of Insta-worthy moments. Entry is free.

The pedestrian thoroughfare of Dixon Street is the beating heart of Chinatown and it really comes alive during the spectacular Lunar New Year celebrations.

At Cockle Bay Wharf, more than 3,000 dragon boat racers will hit the water as crowds of spectators gather to see the spectacular dragon boats battle it out. Get up close to all the action and watch the heart-stopping competition, as the dragon boats race through the waters to pounding drums and cheering spectators.
