In typical Melbourne fashion, there’s are laneways full of hidden tea houses and tiny dumpling shops, but there’s also the super cool restaurant and bar, Seamstress, named thus due to the building’s former incarnation as a textile factory. For special occasion dining, check out Flower Drum, an elegant Chinese restaurant that has won piles of awards for its innovative menu.
If the bustle of a working fruit and vegetable market fills you with glee, head to Queen Victoria Market. Grab a drink from one of the many cafes on the outer edges and head into the fray for all the bargaining and bartering you can handle. Many of the stall holders have samples that you are welcome to try and in amongst all the fruit and veg, there are shops selling everything from cheese and charcuterie, to antipasto and Italian-style roast pork rolls.
For sundowners with a water view, head south to the Yarra River where a leisurely stroll with lead you to any number of waterfront bars and restaurants. There’s You can even hop on a dinner cruise if you want to see the city from a different vantage point.
The next day, get up and take a walk over to Centre Place, otherwise known as the Melbourne Laneway. Cafes crowd together with lane-facing glass counters selling takeaway baguettes to eat in a nearby park or jostle for pole position and snag a table to enjoy a leisurely brekkie with every hipster menu item known to humankind.
