Based in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, Metro Hotel Miranda is proud to support a local community initiative that combines determination, generosity, and heart. This October, Luke, a Year 12 student, is walking 87 kilometres from Wollongong to Sydney to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Joined by his friends Max, Matthew, and Cameron, Luke’s Oceans to Outback challenge shines a light on the importance of giving back while celebrating the incredible work of one of Australia’s most vital services.
Luke, a dedicated Year 12 student, has taken on an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) through the Oceans to Outback initiative. Inspired by the RFDS’s vital work and their fleet of 87 aircraft, Luke has committed to covering 87 kilometres – one kilometre for each aircraft – by walking the distance between Wollongong and Sydney.
Joining Luke on this journey are his friends Max, Matthew, and Cameron. Their plan is to complete the walk in stages:
October 13: Wollongong to Otford
October 18–19: Otford to Sydney CBD, passing through Miranda
This journey not only represents a physical challenge but also a meaningful way to raise vital funds that will keep the RFDS flying and saving lives in regional and remote Australia.
As part of our commitment to supporting the community, Metro Hotel Miranda proudly supports Luke’s Oceans to Outback fundraising walk for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, providing local accommodation along the Wollongong to Sydney route. We are delighted to donate accommodation, ensuring Luke and his team have a comfortable rest before completing the final stretch of their journey.
We admire Luke’s determination and the spirit of his friends in taking on this challenge, and we encourage our community to get behind them.

Together, let’s cheer Luke, Max, Matthew, and Cameron on as they walk for the RFDS!
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS), with its fleet of 87 aircraft, is one of the world’s largest aeromedical organisations, delivering emergency care, essential health services, and patient transfers to remote communities across Australia. Each year, the RFDS helps thousands of Australians, and fundraising efforts like Luke’s Oceans to Outback walk play a vital role in keeping this life-saving service in the air.
