We asked Rikka, Front Office Team Supervisor at Metro Aspire Hotel Sydney, to share a few of her favourite local spots and observations about life in Sydney.
A lot of visitors focus mainly on Sydney’s famous landmarks and beaches, but what many people miss are the smaller everyday experiences that locals really enjoy.
Things like starting the morning with an ocean swim, walking along the coastline, visiting local cafés, or spending time at weekend markets are a big part of Sydney life.
Those quieter moments are often what make the city feel different from other places.
There are plenty of good cafés and restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.
Fork & Grind on Mary Ann Street is a popular local café for coffee, while Edition Roasters in Darling Square is another good option for coffee and casual dining.
For something more substantial, Tan Viet is well known for its pho and crispy chicken, and Pancakes on The Rocks is always a reliable choice for generous meals and desserts.
If you’re visiting Paddy’s Markets, Stack’d inside Hay Street Market is also worth a stop.
Barangaroo Reserve is one of my favourite places for a walk.
You get beautiful harbour views on one side, while the other side is lined with bars, restaurants, and city views around Crown Sydney. It’s a nice mix of relaxed waterfront scenery and city atmosphere.
It’s also a good place to explore both during the day and in the evening.
Bondi Beach is still one of the best recommendations, especially for first-time visitors.
It’s one of Sydney’s most iconic beaches and has a good mix of surf, cafés, restaurants, and coastal scenery.
The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is also highly recommended. It passes several smaller beaches and offers some really impressive ocean views along the cliffs.
One thing that stood out to me was how relaxed and informal daily life can feel in Australia.
Seeing people walk barefoot in public, even into cafés or shops, was definitely surprising at first.
Another difference was how early many shops close compared to other countries. Most places finish around 5 pm, although Thursdays are usually busier with late-night shopping.
Sydney has a different feel to a lot of major cities because it blends city life with beaches, harbour views, and outdoor spaces so naturally.
The harbour and famous landmarks are part of everyday life here, not just tourist attractions, which gives the city a much more open and relaxed atmosphere.
