Mid-February – Early March
Passing the 40 year milestone in 2018, the Mardi Gras gay and lesbian pride parade brings the city to a standstill, with its celebration of the LGBTQI community around the world. The parade features over a hundred groups and an array of mesmerising floats, including Dykes on Bikes, outrageous drag queens, community heroes and talented queer performers. Experience the best of the rainbow!
Starting at the bustling Whitlam Square intersection between Liverpool and Oxford Streets, the parade moves down to Flinders Street and comes to an end at the vast and beautiful Moore Park.
If you want to beat the crowd and reserve the best seats on the house, get a ticket for the Diamond club stand up cocktail event, with private bars, gourmet food and raised platforms for the viewing. Or, if you want more than just a close up, and you’ve decided that a float is the way to go, visit www.mardigras.org.au/parade-registration.
The price ranges from $55 for individuals and groups of 2-5, to $750 for businesses and government organisations. So, put on your coloured wig and get ready to wave.
Note: Pricing is subject to change. For the correct price, confirm on the official site: www.mardigras.org.au/
The largest parade in Australia tends to utilise some of the busiest roads in the CBD, so best to plan in advance as parts of Liverpool Street, Oxford Street and Flinders Street will be closed off and a number of bus services will either be put on hold or redirected.
Metro Hotel Marlow Sydney Central is a short 13 minute walk from the starting point of the parade. Other options include Metro Apartments on Darling Harbour, 23 minutes from the parade, Metro Apartments on King, 22 minutes from the destination, and Metro Aspire Hotel, at a slightly longer 25 minute distance.
