Ipswich – An Exciting Destination for a Short Break

August 31, 2016 06:13:14 PM

Ipswich, Queensland oldest regional city is an exciting short break destination that offers visitors hidden gems of history, the opportunity for raw adventure, and fabulous local produce, all within an easy drive from Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

Ipswich began in the 1820s as a mining settlement and was originally intended to be the Queensland capital.  Parties of lime burners, travelled up river from Brisbane to camp under the still existent fig trees on Limestone Hill, which today incorporates the expansive Queens Park with kids playgrounds, free Australian Animal Park and Environmental Centre.

Queensland’s first railway, built in 1865 to connect Ipswich to the tiny town of Grandchester – spurred Ipswich on to be a major train manufacturing centre  – today leaves the legacy of the award-winning The Workshop Rail Museum, just across the river from the centre of town.

The wealth of such industry lead to the boom in Victorian era public buildings and private houses, such as the Ipswich Art Gallery in what was formerly Queensland’s oldest town hall, which still characterise central Ipswich.  These can all be seen when taking Ipswich’s ‘top of town heritage walking tour.’

The area around Ipswich, once full of small sugar cane holdings and vineyards, spread across the region from the city to the base of the Great Dividing Range, offers scenic rural drives through historic towns like Rosewood, Marburg and Glamorgan Vale, whose names reflect the former cosmopolitan nature of those past settlers.

A more adventurous way to see the region is by hot air balloon, with Floating Images offering a breathtaking ballooning experience, or with a helicopter vineyard tour and pub crawl with Pterodactyl Helicopters, or, for V8 enthusiasts, a hot lap in a V8 supercar at Queensland Raceway, just outside of town.

Everything Ipswich has to offer can be easily accessed and organised from Metro Hotel Ipswich International in the centre of town. This contemporary six storey hotel overlooks pristine parklands and offers a wide range of accommodation to suit your needs.

The hotel’s signature restaurant Harvest Restaurant & Bar serves a delicious a-la-carte menu which reflects the produce of the region, from the Lockyer Valley to the Scenic Rim & Somerset.  After dinner cap off the night with a tasting tray at the neighbouring state-of-the-art Four Hearts Pumpyard micro-brewery, set in a heritage red brick Victorian gem.

Queensland’s beautiful heritage city never felt so young.
