2024 Tradies Sutherland 2 Surf

A Legacy of Fitness, Community, and Fundraising

The iconic Sutherland 2 Surf is set to take place on July 21, 2024. This cherished event organised by the Wanda Surf Life Saving Club stands as a testament to community spirit and charitable initiative.

The11-kilometer fun run kicks off in Flora Street, Sutherland, situated between Merton and Belmont Streets, and culminates at Don Lucas Reserve in Cronulla—a picturesque route that captures the beauty of our coastal landscape.

Each year, over 6,000 runners and walkers eagerly take part in this popular event. As one of Australia’s longest-running fun runs, the S2S holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Moreover, the funds raised from the Tradies Sutherland 2 Surf play a vital role in sustaining Wanda Surf Life Saving Club’s mission to safeguard lives on Wanda beach.

Time-Honoured Tradition of the Tradies Sutherland to Surf

The roots of the event trace back to 1972, when Wanda Surf Life Saving Club conceived the idea to boost fundraising efforts for the club. With just 50 participants in its inaugural year, the Sutherland 2 Surf quickly gained momentum, welcoming 1,200 competitors by 1975. And by 1978 the race was attracting around 4,000 runners – which included the Chain Gang – a team of prisoners from Cessnock Gaol!

From these humble beginnings, the race has flourished, firmly etching its place on the national running calendar.

Over the years, the Sutherland 2 Surf has attracted top-tier athletes, setting the stage for inspiring performances and elevating the race to new heights. Notably, Cronulla-based Andrew Lloyd was the event’s most successful runner – winning eight times by 1995 (he also went on to win the 5000m gold medal at the Auckland Commonwealth Games).

In 1997, the event celebrated its 25th Jubilee where Heather Turland was the first female finisher, crossing the finish line in a remarkable time of 36:32 – foreshadowing her subsequent victory at the City2Surf race, further solidifying the Sutherland 2 Surf’s reputation as a breeding ground for champions.

As the years passed, the race continued to evolve, drawing larger crowds and fostering a sense of camaraderie among participants and spectators alike. The dedication of Wanda SLSC as the event’s organisers has been instrumental in its success, with proceeds going towards crucial Surf Life Saving equipment and initiatives. Beyond the financial support, the Sutherland 2 Surf has become a cherished tradition, weaving a tapestry of cherished memories for generations of runners and volunteers.
